If you’re driving Route 66 into Albuquerque from the east, coming through Tijeras Canyon and dropping down into the city with the Sandia Mountains looming behind you, East Central is the first neighborhood you hit. And if you’re heading out of Albuquerque toward Santa Rosa and points east, this is your last Score420 before you leave town.

The eastern end of Central Avenue has a different feel than Nob Hill or Old Town. Less restored, more everyday. Fewer neon signs (though a few classic ones remain), more small businesses and neighborhood spots. It’s Route 66 as it looks when it’s still a working street rather than a preserved corridor. And it’s the closest Score420 to one of the most spectacular natural experiences in the entire Southwest: the Sandia Peak Tramway.

The history: East Central and the eastern gateway

When Route 66 was realigned along Central Avenue in 1937, the eastern approach to Albuquerque came down through Tijeras Canyon — a dramatic pass between the Sandia Mountains to the north and the Manzano Mountains to the south. The eastern portion of Central Avenue developed as the first real commercial strip travelers hit after descending from the pass.

Motels sprang up. Gas stations, diners, and roadside attractions catering to weary drivers who’d just crossed 100+ miles of eastern New Mexico. Some of those buildings still stand, though many have been repurposed. The neon at the Route 66 Malt Shop, the retro signage at various small motels, and a few surviving mid-century commercial buildings all mark the area’s Route 66 heritage.

Today, East Central is a real neighborhood — International District mixed with older Route 66 remnants, working-class Albuquerque with pockets of preservation. It’s where locals live and shop, and it’s the last piece of Central Avenue before Route 66 climbs back up into the foothills and heads out of town.

Can’t-miss stops on the East Central corridor

Sandia Peak Tramway (30 Tramway Rd NE). This is genuinely one of the great experiences in the American Southwest, and East Central puts you closer to it than any other Score420. The tramway is one of the longest single-cable aerial trams in the world, carrying passengers 2.7 miles from the base station at 6,559 feet elevation up to Sandia Peak at 10,378 feet. From the top, on a clear day, you can see 11,000 square miles — literally over a tenth of New Mexico visible in one sweep. Sunset from Sandia Peak is one of the best cannabis experiences you can plan in the state, provided you consume legally in your accommodation beforehand and time your onset correctly.

Tinkertown Museum (121 Sandia Crest Rd, Sandia Park). East of Albuquerque up in the Sandia foothills, Tinkertown is peak roadside Americana. Founder Ross Ward spent 40+ years carving miniature Western scenes and constructing the museum walls from over 50,000 glass bottles. This is the weird, wonderful, hyper-specific America that Route 66 always celebrated. About 30 minutes east of East Central Score420, ideal as a morning stop before or after your Sandia Peak trip.

Sandia Peak Trail and foothills recreation. For the more adventurous, hiking the La Luz Trail (up to Sandia Peak) or shorter foothills trails puts you in the Sandia landscape without the tramway. La Luz is a serious hike (8 miles one way, 3,200 feet elevation gain) — bring water, plan the day, don’t consume cannabis before or during a serious mountain hike.

Petroglyph National Monument (west side of the city, but worth mentioning as an ABQ-region highlight). Not on Route 66 but reachable from any of the ABQ Score420 locations. Thousands of Native American petroglyphs carved into volcanic rock. Ancient, sacred, meaningful. Approach with respect. Do not consume cannabis on National Park Service land.

The Route 66 Malt Shop and 66 Diner (1720 and 1405 Central Ave respectively). Both worth mentioning again for East Central travelers driving west toward Nob Hill and beyond. The eastern approach to Nob Hill starts to feel like classic Route 66 around these stops.

Where to eat

66 Diner (1405 Central Ave NE) — Perfect for Route 66 travelers who want the full theming experience. The former Sam’s 66 Service station converted in 1987 into a 1950s-inspired diner. Milkshakes are the point. West of East Central but easily reachable.

Route 66 Malt Shop (1720 Central Ave SE) — Classic burger-and-shake spot with genuine Route 66 atmosphere.

Elk & Beaver Deli (3205 Silver Ave SE) — Sandwiches and salads, casual, solid.

Zia Diner (Coronado Center area) — Classic Southwestern comfort food.

El Camino Dining Room (6800 4th St NW) — Not on East Central but worth mentioning for the Route 66 diner architecture and atmosphere.

Multiple Vietnamese, Thai, and international options along East Central. The International District that overlaps with East Central has some of the best pho and banh mi in Albuquerque — worth exploring if you’re staying nearby.
